Spooky Season Song: Deadman’s Pond by Quote the Raven

“Where I’m from we don’t like to talk about what lies in the depths below,” sing Quote the Raven in ‘Deadman’s Pond.’

Deadman’s Pond and Gibbet Hill, St. John’s, NL

The track, which appears on the duo’s 2018’s Golden Hour, tells the story of the supposedly-bottomless body of water on Signal Hill in St. John’s, NL that became a receptacle for the bodies of executed criminals.

The subject matter is, obviously, dark but, the song is thoroughly enjoyable. It demonstrates the well-honed, folk-pop sensibilities that have made the band a favourite, not just in Newfoundland and Labrador but, across the country.

‘Deadman’s Pond’ is not a true Halloween song, I guess. That said, how could a track about sinking the bodies of executed criminals not make the ‘Spooky season’ cut… especially when it’s by a band whose name makes you think of Edgar Allen Poe.

Check it out.
