Before The Night (Tibb’s Eve) by The Duds

In Newfoundland, Tibb’s Eve (or Tib’s Eve) is the name given to December 23rd. It’s sort of the unofficial start of the Christmas season on the night before Christmas Eve or, as The Duds describe it, “the night before, the night before.”

The track was released in 2021 as part of a collection of Christmas singles from the duo. I had an opportunity to ask Melanie O’Brien and Philip Goodridge about the song and what inspired them to write about Tibb’s Eve.

Here’s what Melanie O’Brien had to say:

“It's always just a bit of magic; a magical time where it really does feel ‘time out of time.’ You know what I mean, sometimes the best part is before we get to what we think is the best part, and that's what Tibb’s Eve means to me.”

More Christmas and Holiday Music from Newfoundland & Labrador

Stay tuned for more great Christmas songs from Newfoundland and Labrador.

I'm a big fan of traditional Christmas music, I love to hear a modern rendition of a 300 year old carol but, occasionally, a brand new song comes to my attention and dominates my Christmas listening. Newfoundland and Labrador's musicians have been holding their own in both regards. I’ll be sharing local songs —both old and new— from now until Christmas in my 2023 NL Music Advent Calendar.
