Rum Ragged: Mrs. Fograty’s Christmas Cake

When it comes to Christmas fruit cake there are only two kinds of people: people who love it, and people who are wrong.

That said, I’m not sure I’m going to try to eat any of Mrs. Fograty’s Christmas Cake. The song is from Ireland and presents a Mrs. Fograty, busily encouraging people to try her tough-to-eat cake (which, among more traditional ingredients, has a crust nailed on with glue). It is reminiscent of local classic Trinity Cake, in subject matter anyway.

It’s a fun track that has been recorded by acts ranging from The Irish Rovers:

to Sharon, Lois and Bram:

My favourite is Rum Ragged’s take which appears on the Rum Ragged at Christmas album.

Newfoundland Christmas Music

Stay tuned for more great Newfoundland Christmas music.

I'm a big fan of traditional Christmas music, I love to hear a modern rendition of a 300 year old carol but, occasionally, a brand new song comes to my attention and dominates my Christmas listening.

Newfoundland's musicians have been holding their own in both regards. I’ll be sharing a song a day from now until Christmas in a NFLD Music Advent Calendar.
