Fall Awake: The Once & Jack Carty

Exsanguinate is not a word the turns up in pop music everyday… but there it is sitting comfortably, in the lyrics of Fall Wake by The Once and Jack Carty. The song is, in subject matter, an ode to the liminal. It’s about the space between being awake and being asleep, being alive and being dead.

It’s whimsical, thought-provoking, and almost maddeningly, singable. I can’t tell you how often I’m walking my dog singing ‘second star to the right…’

It’s a great track, but The Once specialize in making great music, so no surprise there. The surprise lay in my discovery of Australia’s Jack Carty. Fall Awake came about through a Folk Music Canada initiative to foster international collaboration. The Once and Carty created the song together. I knew none of his work but I’ve quickly become a fan!

You can check out Carty’s cover of Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You right here. Fall Awake is embedded above and on the Newfoundland Mixtape.
