Andrew Rodgers’ Downtown
As I write this, it’s Saturday morning and I’m listening to Andrew Rodgers’ new single ‘Downtown’ on repeat.
Thematically, the ‘Downtown’ is inspired by Rodgers’ experience living downtown and the sights and sounds of living in a city. “You never really know what you’re gonna hear,” he sings, “it ain’t always nice, it ain’t always pretty.” To illustrate, he paints a picture of the assortment of characters who occupy the streets, contrasting them with an assortment of musical luminaries — everyone from Tina Turner to Liza Minnelli.
It’s a great piece of folk-rock with a memorable melody and thoughtful lyrics. Rodgers sincere delivery grants the track a genuine emotional resonance that makes the track feel brand new… again.
I first encountered (and loved the song) when Nick Earle recorded it for his album No More Hiding. Earle’s version of the song is, not surprisingly, rockier whereas Rodgers skews closer to singer-songwriter
I enjoy both versions — a great song is a great song.
Rodgers is currently working on his debut solo album which is set to be released in early 2024. In the meantime, check out his single Last Man Standing and his work with the powerhouse pop-rock band Fairgale, where he serves as singer, guitarist and songwriter.
