Jenina MacGillivray’s Perseids

With her debut album Marion, Jenina MacGillivray set the bar pretty high. The album won Music NL’s Album of the Year and MacGillivray earned the Female Artist of the Year nod.

The acclaim was well-deserved.

Now the St. John’s-based artist has a brand new collection — Perseids. I’ve been listening to it from beginning to end, on repeat. I appreciate more each time I hear it. The music is totally engaging. The lyrics are thought-provoking, touching and, at times, funny.

It’s a fantastic folk-pop collection. Truly, there are no weak links — it’s well-crafted and thoughtfully curated.

I highly recommend listening to it as an entire album but, if you’re ‘not a whole album kinda person,’ listen to the album opener, ‘Highway Dreamer.’ It’s a dreamy ode to artists that will have you singing along.

After that move on to ‘Elephant,’ a whimsical song about memories you can’t let go — even though you might like to. It will make you understand why MacGillivary has been likened to Joni Mitchell.

At that point you’ll probably decide you’re a ‘whole album kinda person’ after all.

You can get Perseids right now on Bandcamp (digitally and vinyl options) and wherever you stream music.
