Mallory Johnson: F*ck That

You probably already know Mallory Johnson; she has a pretty impressive résumé.

The multi ECMA-winner is the singer-songwriter behind ‘Wise Woman’ and ‘Surprise Party;’ she contributed her cover of ‘River of No Return’ to the Ron Hynes tribute Sonny Don’t Go Away; and once upon a time she sang with the band the Cormiers.

She’s clearly made some great music but I think her new single ‘F*ck That’ is next level. It’s emotional, personal and relatable.

Given the F-bomb in the title, I was expecting an altogether more bombastic track but what Johnson delivers is subtlety and nuance. She almost whispers against sparse instrumentation, she allows for moments of silence and delivers a beautiful melodic vocal that, sometimes seems to soar. It‘s dynamic and effective blend of lyric, delivery and production. It all just works. You can’t help but be seduced by Johnson’s cathartic release. When she sings ‘f*ck that’ it just feels right; nothing else would work as well.

Check it out now wherever you get your music.
